ABOUT THE PROGRAM

About the Ethnomusicology Research Program

The Ethnomusicology Research Program was established in May 1997 (Senate's 59th meeting, dated 28th of May 1997) as an external Program.

It was the very first music related research program hosted by the University of Cyprus.

For a period of 3 years the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies hosted the Program. The Program was also hosted by the Department of Social and Political Sciences, until June 2001, when the Research and Publication Committee of the University (Head, Professor Andreas Demetriou) undertook the responsibility of the publication of the results of the Program.

The purpose of the Ethnomusicology Research Program is to systematically collect, record, and study the musical-poetic traditions, created by the different main social groups of Cyprus society. The ultimate goal of this project is to establish an official Ethnomusicology Archive, which will include all fieldwork findings (audio recordings, videos, pictures, and other data collected), and will also accept other musical collection to be stored. Furthermore, books, audio CDs and multimedia CD-ROMs will be developed which will be used as resources by other researchers and educators.

Original tapes of the Archive are located in the Lab of the Ethnomusicology Research Program. These are the result of a wide fieldwork that is being done on the island of Cyprus by the Program. Taping and recording of traditional folk songs and music represent songs and music as the Cypriot performers perform them at the moment of the fieldwork.

There are about:
(a) 82 Normal tapes, consists of more than 800 songs and poems
(b) 50 Reel-to-Reel tapes, consists of more than 1000 songs and poems.
(c) 25 videotapes, 100 pictures and other documents collected during the fieldwork.
(d) 100 transcriptions and scores and about the same number of poetic texts written on paper (after listening the tapes)
(e) 100 CDs in Audio format (CD quality) or in AIFF and WAV, stereo 44.100 khz, 16 bit. consists of converted back-up of the above original tapes.

Fieldwork continues to cover more areas and social groups following specific schedule. At the same time, the research team works on computer analysis, evaluation and synthesis of the collected materials including statistical classification.

About the Ethnomusicology Research Program's Web-Site

The Ethnomusicology Research Program, as a computer aided program, decided the development of a web site in 1997. This decision was made in order to disseminate and promote the research on traditional folk music and songs, (and generally on traditional folk art). This research is contacted and directed by the Ethnomusicologist Dr. Panicos Giorgoudes, the co-ordinator of the Program.  Under specific coordinator's instructions and supervising, the first web site of the Program (1997-1999) was designed and developed by George Stratis, and Elena Ioannidou.

This new site you are currently viewing was designed and developed by Dr. Vrasidas, who maintains the copyright for the structure and design.
Dr. Giorgoudes maintains the copyright for the data and the research presented on this site.

This site promotes the study of the interaction between new-media and traditional arts and the creation of new procedures in the art and communication field, and the support and promotion of independent new-media art production. In addition the Program's site supports new-media artists working in Cyprus. In the short-term, this web site will be used to present findings from the research relating to traditional folk music and songs. In the long-term, the site will be used as an online art forum, which will link folk artists and researchers from around Europe that will engage in discussion and exchange of ideas via a listserv.

There are several features that will be added in the near future. Some of the main ones are listed below.

  • A list of full-text research papers published, discussing the research process and methods and the data presented through the site
  • The complete set of data collected thus far
  • Specific suggestions for researchers working in the ethnomusicology field
  • Online lesson plans and suggestions for educators on ways that the site can be used in all levels of education
  • An online discussion forum
  • Proposals for collaborations in the field using emerging technologies such as the web.
